Derek O'Konek Named Jefferson Elementary Principal

Richland School District is pleased to announce that Derek O’Konek will be the next principal of Jefferson Elementary.

O’Konek, most recently the assistant principal at Jason Lee Elementary, was one of several candidates considered for the role.

“Mr. O’Konek has a reputation for great leadership and at building relationships with students and staff,” says Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education Brian Moore. “We are excited to have him serve the Jefferson community, support staff and help students grow.”

O’Konek joined the district in 2013 and has helped implement various programs at Jason Lee aimed at building connections with the community, creating a positive school culture and improving student academic performance. He also was an assistant principal at Badger Mountain Elementary and Enterprise Middle School. Before coming to Richland, he worked in the Moses Lake School District as an elementary teacher and administration intern.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degree in school administration from Central Washington University.

“I’m thrilled to become part of a school that has such dedicated staff and families that has long put students first,” O’Konek said. “I look forward to working with everyone at Jefferson to ensure each student is poised to be successful.”

O’Konek replaces Principal Bobbi Buttars, who accepted a position outside of the district.
